Just 24 hours after its female counterparts went to the top, the Cicero-North Syracuse boys indoor track and field team did the same and won the Section III Class AA championship Tuesday night at Manley Field House.
the Northstars earned 88 points to beat a deep and talented field of opponents. Baldwinsville had 60 points to hold off Corcoran (58 points) for the runner-up spot.
To get it moving, Jake Whritenour, Shaun Hyde, Mike Fiume and Alex Neumeister worked together to claim victory in the 4×400 relay. The Northstars’ time of 3:31.87 held off West Genesee, who was second in 3:32.83.
Chris Buchanan emerged with a victory in the mile, his time of 4:38.82 beating B’ville’s Tim Chambers by 1.01 seconds. In the 3,200-meter run, Buchanan finished in 9:42.61, taking second as Alex Hatz (Fayetteville-Manlius) blazed to first place in 9:18.63.
Eric Sykora had his own first-place finish in the pole vault, the only Class AA athlete to clear 11 feet 6 inches, just ahead of Corcoran’s Jordan Prietti and Oswego’s Ryan Taylor, each of whom cleared 11 feet.
Elsewhere on the oval, Keenan Williams had a third-place clocking of 8.39 seconds in the 55-meter hurdles. Jeff Quick matched that by taking third in the 600-meter run (1:28.63), just ahead of Whritenour, who was fourth in 1:28.76.
Brandon Marlow took fourth (38.11 seconds) and Zach Brown fifth (38.15 seconds) in the 300-meter dash, as Nick Dunbar got fourth in the 1,000-meter run (2:43.29) and Vincent St. James took sixth in the 55-meter dash in 6.89 seconds.
Kevin McCarthy tied for third in the high jump by clearing 6 feet, just one inch off the top mark, while Jordan Thompson earned fourth in the shot put with a toss of 47 feet 8 inches. Neumeister, seventh in the triple jump, just missed the points.
Jared Walther, Jason Tuori, Alex Bottorff and Wes Kufel combined for third place in the 4×800 relay in 8:38.83. St. James, Marlow, Brown and Fiume worked together in the 4×200 relay to finish fourth in 1:37.62.
