In a strong late-season performance, the Solvay girls volleyball team defended its home court last Tuesday night with a three-game sweep over its neighbors from Westhill. The Bearcats rolled through the first game 25-16. Each of the next two games went beyond the wire, but on both occasions, Solvay broke a 24-24 tie, then served it out to win 26-24 and complete the sweep. Shannon Slowik, with six kills, led a balanced Solvay front line where Ashley Hunter earned five kills and Bre Lioto added four kills. Brittini Casimiro and Calla Bakowski each had nine assists, with Casimiro adding three kills and Bakowski also picking up two kills and two assists. For Westhill, Erika Thomas picked up 24 assists. Courtney Price led the front line with nine assists as Abbey Langdon and Michaela Medici each had five kills. This came after a non-league match where the Bearcats rallied from behind to beat Cortland in five games. Solvay prevailed 25-19 in the opening game, only to see the Purple Tigers take the second game 25-19 and pull out the third game 26-24. Furious at that, the Bearcats came back, winning the fourth game 25-19 and the decisive fifth game 25-16. Casimiro picked up 19 assists, with Bakowski adding nine assists, plus five kills. Hunter excelled up front with 15 kills as Slowik added six kills. Cortland, in defeat, had Josie Roberts earn 10 kills and Sarah Curtis gain 18 assists.
