For the Canastota wrestling team, it amounts to the four busiest days of its entire season — a big Wednesday-night meet against Adirondack, followed by the annual Richard New Memorial Tournament on its home mat. First though, the Raiders had to go to Boonville. In a showdown of two of the Center State Conference’s best programs, the Wildcats would beat Canastota by a score of 33-23. They split the first two matches of the night — Adirondack’s Stephen Burke prevailing at 125 pounds, Tyler Sirota answering at 130 pounds by beating Kevin O’Rourke 14-6. Then came a pair of surges, as the Wildcats won the next three matches, all by pin, only to see Canastota answer with four straight wins to zoom in front 23-21. Jeremy Brodfuehrer began the Raiders’ push at 152 pounds, pinning Nick Mills 44 seconds into the second period. Fred Sherman (160 pounds) followed with a hard-fought 11-7 decision over Cody Buhler. In the 171-pound match, Zach Zupan earned his pin over Devin Riegler in 3:37, just before John Carver (189 pounds) rolled past Tom Egnaczyk, just missing a technical fall in a 14-1 romp. Knowing that it had to forfeit in the final 119-pound match, Canastota needed wins in the other two contests — and came up just short. Sam Stagnitti, at 215 pounds, took a 5-4 loss to Tim Stammers before Joe Tiller (112 pounds) fell to Pat Webster 10-7. A large field of more than 15 teams is expected for the New tournament that starts Friday and ends on Saturday.
