Now that it’s January, it might be time for the Bishop Grimes boys basketball team to make its big move. The Cobras used such a tactic last winter to bolt toward an eventual Section III Class B-1 championship, and now the same transformation may be happening. Earning its fourth win in a row following an uneven 2-3 start, the Cobras went to 6-2 Skaneateles last Friday night and took charge in the second half, beating the Lakers 69-57. Actually, Grimes was strong from the opening tip, racing out to a 20-13 first-quarter advantage. Skaneateles did respond for a time, closing within four, 32-28, by halftime. But the Cobras took over in the third quarter with a 24-12 push, with Mike Stone and Zach Vaught at the helm. Stone worked his way to 21 points, while Vaught set a new season mark by earning 20 points. Antron Irby, with eight points, supplied some help, while Kujcok Ater and Mike Sugamosto each had six points. In defeat, the Lakers’ Nick Pesarchick earned 17 points. In what amounted to a warm-up to the week’s action, the Cobras played Manlius-Pebble Hill last Monday night and roared past the Trojans 78-36. A lopsided first half saw Grimes bulldoze its way to a 43-12 margin, allowing everyone on the roster to see some playing time in the second half. Stone, with 13 points, led a balanced attack where Irby (12 points) and Tavon Moore (11 points) also hit double figures. Vaught (nine points) and Sugamosto (eight points) came close, while Ater had six points. Then Wednesday’s Cazenovia game got snowed out, leaving Grimes inactive until the visit to Skaneateles — which didn’t prove to be a problem. On Monday night, the Cobras went to Homer, which sets up Wednesday’s key trip to meet Hannibal, their first meeting since the Warriors won last year’s Class B final at Manley Field House. On Saturday, Grimes meets East Syracuse-Minoa at 3 p.m.
