Already in first place in the OHSL Liberty division, the Cazenovia wrestling team played host to its own annual tournament on Saturday.
In all, 14 visiting teams came to Buckley Gym to offer challenges to the hosts.
Everyone backed down from the challenge — except Copenhagen, who won with 202 points as the host Lakers took second place with 180.5 points.
Brad Nardella would have his turn in the spotlight, winning the 96-pound championship and sharing Most Outstanding Wrestler honors with Solvay/Westhill’s Tom Bradley. Nardella pinned Sandy Creek’s Jake Benedict 34 seconds into the third period of their championship match.
In all, three Lakers prevailed, including Alex Petroff, who had to work hard in his 125-pound final to beat Copenhagen’s Ryan Garvin 6-2, and Sam Taylor, whose 171-pound title was earned with a technical fall over Homer’s Shane Davis.
Jake Wilson got to the 112-pound final before falling to Caleb Green (Port Byron) 5-2.
Adam Lockwood (130 pounds) and Shephard (135 pounds) both took third place, with Shephard handling Solvay/Westhill’s Tyler Avery 10-1.
Adam Kemp (215 pounds) and Zack Templar (285 pounds) each had fourth-place efforts. Jake Perry (140 pounds), Phil Kugler (160 pounds) and Cody Foster (189 pounds) posted fifth-place finishes.
