Marcellus beats Homer, goes to 7-0

Rumbling toward the end of 2008, the Marcellus boys basketball team found no time to let up for anybody, pushing its season-opening win streak to seven games.

When the Mustangs hosted Cortland last Tuesday night, it used a quick start as the catalyst for a 65-51 victory over the Purple Tigers from the Class A ranks.

Before Cortland could even get settled, Marcellus pushed out to a 20-9 lead, with Will Fiacchi the main cause of it as he kept on hitting shots, whether from the perimeter or foul line.

For the rest of the game, the Purple Tigers would play on even terms, unable to do much about the Mustangs’ margin because Fiacchi was working his way to 27 points for the night, which included five successful 3-pointers.

Dan Heil, with 12 points, offered the main help, as Zach Barbaro earned eight points and Niko Wagner added six points. Cortland’s Trevor Williamson kept his team within sight, matching Fiacchi with 27 points of his own.
