The MOST’s Junior Caf (c) Scientifique presents Jeff DeGroff:
Join the Milton J. Rubenstein Museum of Science & Technology (MOST) in welcoming guest speaker Jeff DeGroff for this month’s edition of the Junior Caf (c) Scientifique. On Saturday, July 19, 2008, from 9:30-11 A.M., DeGroff will hold an interactive talk for middle and high school students at the MOST, located in Syracuse’s historic Armory Square. The presentation will focus on the geology and formation of New York State caves and include safety and training information aimed at future cave explorers. The program is sponsored by the Technology Alliance of Central New York and has scheduled speakers on the third Saturday of every month from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
This month’s speaker, DeGroff, is a tour manager at Howe Caverns, where he oversees the daily tours which focus on how and why the caverns formed as well as on the conservation techniques used to preserve their overall structure. DeGroff has worked at Howe Caverns for 40 years and is also responsible for training and educating his staff of 40 tour guides.
DeGroff will cover such topics as the geological history and location of New York caves, the rock types that form them, as well as the caves that are safe to explore. An interactive question-and-answer session led by the students will follow the presentation.
What is the Junior Caf (c) Scientifique?
It is a monthly program at the MOST featuring interactive discussions on a current science, technology, engineering or math topic. Students and their parents are encouraged to attend the free event, which also includes a light breakfast and free admission to the MOST museum’s interactive exhibits. The program allows students an opportunity to express interest in a science topic in a casual, non-academic setting.
Register in advance. For more information and to register, call the MOST at 425-9068, ext. 2121, or e-mail jr.caf (c)@tacny.org by Friday July 18.
