In a new week, at a new locale, with much different circumstances than the week before, the Westhill boys track and field team gained some sweet payback on Solvay.
During Wednesday’s OHSL Liberty division championship meet at Marcellus, the Warriors accumulated 130 points and won the team title, with the Bearcats settling for third place (112 points) behind the host Marcellus Mustangs (124 points).
With Marcellus stars like Chris Stogsdill and Matt Weeks prevailing in individual events, Solvay lost enough of its dominant stature, allowing Westhill to get in front.
Eric Moore gave Westhill a victory in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:01.41. Andrew Corcoran finished second in the mile (4:30.83) and took runner-up honors in the 3,200-meter run in 4:30.83 as Stogsdill won both events for the hosts.
Over in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Vinny Savastano won, in 10:38.77, as Keagan Lounsberry finished third in 11:16.70. Tom Fisher added a title in the discus, throwing it 131 feet 2 inches, and he was also fourth in the shot put as teammate Tom Trendowski took second place with a toss of 43 feet 7 1/2 inches.
Pavle Bujanonvic, Anthony Legnetto, Jesse Krell and Dymytry Mazuryk teamed up to take the 4×400 relay in 3:32.47. Legnetto, Chris Moore, Eric Moore and Eric Garafono combined for a second in the 4×800 (8:23.97) as Krell, Legnetto, Matt Trendowski and Tom Trendowski finished third in the 4×100 in 46.69 seconds.
Individually, Bujanovic finished third in the 400-meter dash in 51.70 seconds, as Krell got fourth in both the 200 (24.04 seconds) and 100 (11.79 seconds) sprints. Kevin Zych got fourth in the 3,200-meter run (10:06.98) and sixth in the mile, while Mazuryk wandered to fourth (1:00.18) in the 400 hurdles.
Tom Trendowski threw in a fourth-place long jump of 19 feet 4 inches and adde fifth place in the triple jump. Jesse Hunt was third in the pentathlon with 1,867 points.
S0lvay still had a fair share of fine efforts. Mike Acchione edged CBA’s Jim Mather in the 400-meter hurdles to win in 57.08 seconds and also had a top triple jump of 41 feet, while Greg Manning took the 400-meter dash in 50.11 seconds and finished second in the 200 in 22.85 seconds.
Acchione was second in the 100 in 11.63 seconds and teamed with Manning, Ben Carl and Tyler Grim to take the 4×100 relay in 45.34 seconds. Grim was fifth in the 100 and 200, while Jeremy Parker finished fourth at 400 meters (52.55 seconds) and Paul DelPrato got fifth place at 800 meters in 2:04.99. DelPrato, Grim, Manning and Conor Halton ran to third place in the 4×400 relay in 3:42.62.
