This winning by the Liverpool girls indoor track and field team is getting to be quite contagious — or at the very least, a habit worth repeating.
Once again, the Warriors reigned over the field during last Wednesday’s Bob Grieve Memorial Invitational at Manley Field House.
Benefiting as they switched from two-person events to pure individual competition (plus one relay), Liverpool earned 78 points, easily surpassing Fayetteville-Manlius, who claimed second place with 54 points.
Janeeka Benson began the winning trend, needing 8.75 seconds to hold off Cicero-North Syracuse’s Jasmine Thompson (8.92 seconds) to take the 55-meter hurdles.
In the 55-meter dash, Wanetta Rodney would rule for the Warriors, her clocking of 7.33 seconds well clear of Skaneateles’ Victoria Sakal (7.72 seconds), a margin of 0.39 seconds being quite large for a sprint. Rodney was also fourth in the long jump, going 15 feet 5 3/4 inches.
Earning 18 points by themselves, Sara Rothenberg and Emily Chen went 1-2 in the pole vault, as Rothenberg cleared 8 feet 6 inches and Chen cleared 8 feet.
Jennifer Mackenzie got to second place in the high jump (5 feet 1 inch), just behind CNS star Monique Roberts (5 feet 2 inches), as Jenn Culp earned the runner-up spot in the shot put by tossing it 32 feet 3 inches.
Liverpool fared well in the lone relay, the 4×400, where Emily Coldren, Nikki Liadka, Jennifer VanderMeulen and Skye Borasky got second place in 4:17.10 behind F-M, who won in 4:12.51.
Trina Bills earned a fourth-place time of 3:11.41 in the 1,000-meter run as Rachel Putman got fourth in the 3,000-meter run in 11:57.27. Freshman Hannah Anthes got to fifth place in the 300-meter dash in 44.53 seconds.
Over in the boys edition of the Grieve meet, Liverpool was eighth, with 14 points. Corey Brundage had his team’s best finish, a third in the 55-meter hurdles (8.44 seconds), as Pat Single got fourth place in the shot put with a toss of 45 feet 3 1/2 inches. Ethan Hickey got fifth place in the 1,000-meter run (2:39.03), just where Bryan Picciotto finished as he had a fifth-place clocking of 9:59.87.
