Fashion is an art form that has always thrived in Skaneateles, but never more so than recently. One thing the big box stores can’t seem to get a handle on is fashion, maybe that is why so many independent clothing stores are doing well in the village.
Robin North of Bella Blue said the snow hasn’t really effected their business because a lot of locals support her shop on Jordan Street.
“They are coming out running their errands and stopping in,” she said. “Desperately coming in for gifts. I always tell everyone that we are here for the locals — it’s our town and our community.”
Joe’s Jeans are what women want North said.
“They have a really great fit that makes them comfortable,” she said, “They are expensive — but wear well, so there is value received.”
Sally Mason from cate & sally’s at 58 E. Genesee St. said their month is right on target year to date. Accessories and luxury items, such as cashmere sweaters are the big hit this year. Brands people come in for are Eileen Fisher, Areli (dressy silks) and Tano and Hobo purses and leather goods.
“And let’s not forget about Spanks,” she said.
Spanks is a brand of undergarment that is form flattering and more comfortable than its predecessors.
The ever-elegant Sue Rhinehart just west of cate and sally’s at the Skaneateles Fur Exchange said that fur coats are very hot with this snowy weather. This year’s big item is a reversible sheered mink that is one part raincoat, one part lighter weight fur.
Saunter a bit more to the west and Skaneateles’ longtime clothing purveyor Roland’s is ever present. Mike said footwear including boots have been moving (pun intended) and anything fleece. But that’s all for now folks as he was so busy he had to get back his customers.
A little bit further west on Genesee is another women’s clothing store, The Country Ewe. Sally Adams said it’s been all about sweaters, hats and mittens this season.
“The Icelandic jackets are really selling too,” she said.
These shops and many more were getting ready to host “Gent’s Night” this Thursday Dec. 20 from 6 to 9 p.m. An evening set aside to help gentleman shop for the women in their lives.
Shopping local makes sense by keeping the dollars in the community and also saving on gas. Add the quality of goods and service and shopping in Skaneateles turns Christmas gift gathering into a joy rather than a duty.
