To say that the Liverpool girls indoor track and field team was ready to start the 2007-08 season would be grossly understating it.
Winning everywhere, the Warriors blitzed the field at last Saturday’s CNYITA Kickoff Meet at Hamilton College, piling up 92 points to nearly double the total of runner-up Cicero-North Syracuse, who was second with 52 points.
In all, Liverpool earned five titles. Janeeka Benson and Nikki Liadka teamed up for the first title, in the 55-meter hurdles, as their times added up to 18.94 seconds. Benson’s time of nine second flat was the best of the day.
Moving one, Benson and Liadka joined Hannah Anthes and Armani Moore to claim the 4×200 relay in 1:54.13, the only sub-two minute time in the field.
Liverpool also won the long 4×800 relay as Rachel Putman, Stacy Murphy, Laura Nicolais and Lesley Bowers teamed up for a clocking of 10:52.34, again holding off CNS.
Over in field events, the Warriors won the pole vault when Emily Chen and Sarah Rothenberg combined to clear 10 feet 10 inches. In the long jump, Wanetta Rodney had the best leap of 15 feet 7 inches and teamed with Moore to go 29 feet 9 inches.
Elsewhere, Liverpool got second in the shot put (60 feet 3 1/4 inches) and third in the high jump (9 feet) and triple jump (58 feet 3 1/4 inches) to account for 20 more points.
Jenna Notar, Trina Bills, Lindsey Wallace and Melissa Riehl teamed to get second in the 1,600 sprint medley in 4:45.33, with Riehl also helping Jennifer VanderMeulen, Ashley Warren and Skye Borasky to get third in the 4×400 (4:33.85).
Bills, Rodney, Murphy and Naomi Bloomingdale earned third in the 2,000 sprint medley in 6:07.84, while the fourth-place distance medley relay team (14:09.83) included Bloomingdale, Bowers, Murphy and Brigid Heenan.
Next to that, Liverpool’s boys team had a modest showing, claiming ninth place in the Boys CNYITA Kickoff with 20 points, far from the winning total of 74 points that CNS posted.
Most of those points came from field events, where the Warriors were third in the triple jump (69 feet 11 inches) and shot put (82 feet 3 inches) and fourth in the long jump (33 feet 9 1/4 inches).
The only real dent Liverpool made on the oval came in the 4×200 relay, where Kaleb Fleming, Corey Brundage, Chris Earle and Pedro Torres took fourth place in 1:43.90.
