Showing its remarkable growth, the Sknaeateles girls tennis team is the only one to send two different representatives to this weekend’s state championship tournament at Eastside Racquet Club in Manlius.
Katherine Hill and Leigh Ryan form one duo, while Emily Wood and Alexa Campanile form the other Laker team that will begin play at Eastside on Saturday morning.
Both duos advanced to this event through their work in last week’s Section III Division III tournament and state qualifier, a long series of high-pressure matches culminating last Saturday with the qualifier at Drumlins.
In the Division III tournament, Hill and Ryan finished on top, beating CBA’s duo of Emily Norkett and Marissa Rotondo in three sets 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
From there, they moved on to the qualifier and beat Wood and Campanile, eventually making their way to the semifinals. When Hill and Ryan beat Ruchika Sangani and Alex Vizgaitis (Fayetteville-Manlius) 6-4, 6-4, they clinched their place in the state tournament.
As for Campanile and Wood, they also reached the semifinals, only to take a 6-4, 6-2 loss to Central Square’s tandem of Mikaelie Fletcher and Liz Uhrinec.
Since the top three finishers advance, Campanile and Wood had to beat Sangani and Vizgaitis in the consolation match. Under the most pressure they had faced all season, Campanile and Wood came through, winning in straight sets 7-5, 6-3 to join their Skaneateles teammates on the state roster.
Hill and Ryan lost the state qualifier title match to Fletcher and Uhrinec 6-4, 6-2, but it didn’t matter. They were now on the way to Eastside — and would have some Skaneateles company.
