Now all that is left for the Skaneateles girls lacrosse team is to pull off a third consecutive state Class C championship.
Nothing less is expected from these Lakers, especially after a regular season where it finished 16-1 and got its only blemish from undefeated West Genesee.
In what turned out to be one of its toughest assignments of the season, the Lakers ventured to Alibrandi Stadium Thursday night and pulled out a 15-10 victory over Christian Brothers Academy.
Though it led most of the way, Skaneateles could not shake CBA, protecting a modest lead most of the way by getting yet another star turn from Stephanie Rice.
For the most part, CBA’s defense did a solid job of containment against the Lakers’ deep and vaunted attack. But it could do nothing about Rice, who torched the Brothers for eight goals and made the singular difference in this tough contest.
Kelsey Nangle, with three goals, and Libby Johnson, with a goal and four assists, offered the main help, as Jenna Lotkowictz added a pair of tallies and Shannon Tierney also scored.
Skaneateles had its own fine effort on defense, holding CBA star M.E. Lapham to a single goal as Brittany Brigandi and Katie Webster (three goals each) led the Brothers’ attack and Emma Taylor made 10 saves to keep it closer.
The Lakers’ 15th win in a row came last Tuesday, at home, where it shook off a tough challenge from Westhill and beat the Warriors 18-7.
For a half, the Warriors, led by Laura Zimmerman (two goals, two assists), stayed within sight. But from an 8-6 advantage at the break, Skaneateles went even faster and soon left Westhill far behind.
Rice backed up her five goals with two assists. Johnson and Lotkowictz were the other main threats, each of them scoring four times as Johnson also put up two assists.
Kelsey Nangle added two goals, with Emma Hueber, Laura Trenti and Lindsay Tarolli earning one goal apiece. Tierney gained two assists.
