Back home from its spring-break work, the Westhill baseball team had to endure all the snow early last week, then wait for it to melt before its season resumed.
To say that the Warriors were ready would be a giant understatement.
In three games over two sun-drenched days, the Warriors flattened Marcellus and Cazenovia by a combined score of 54-4, a frightening display of power that sets the stage for bigger contests this week.
This all began Friday, at Marcellus, where the Warriors rode Mike DeCarr’s career performance to a 16-1 victory over the Mustangs.
It wasn’t enough that DeCarr gave Westhill a complete-game four-hitter on the mound that featured nine strikeouts.
Somehow, DeCarr got even better at the plate. The sophomore twice belted pitches over the fence for home runs, part of an afternoon where he earned five RBIs.
Not far behind him, Mike Mascari also came up big, with four RBIs that included a triple. Ryan Malley doubled and earned two RBIs, with Rich Hevier contributing a triple and RBI and Tom Piscitell also doubling.
On Saturday, Westhill made up last Wednesday’s snowed-out game with Cazenovia, part of a full doubleheader as it moved up the May 2 rematch to take full advantage of the warm weather.
In the opener, the Warriors scored in every single inning, took full advantage of six errors, and bashed the Lakers 18-3.
Hevier, Mascari and P.J. Niedzwiecki all crushed home runs as part of a 15-hit assault as Piscitell joined Mascari and Niedzwiecki with three RBIs apiece. Dan Gasapo bashed a pair of doubles as Hevier, Malley and Zach Kiggins all drove in two runs. Malley also pitched five innings to earn the win.
And that was just the first act. The second game was even more of a romp as Westhill lashed out 15 more hits and earned a 20-0 victory to complete the sweep. Four pitchers — Piscitell, Niedzwiecki, Dave Tatamus and Gasapo — combined on the shutout.
Kiggins finished with a career-high six RBIs, including a home run. DeCarr smashed his third homer of the week and Niedzwiecki went deep for the second time in the afternoon. Brian Kane matched Niedzwiecki with three RBIs as David Kane doubled and drove in two runs.
At 7-1 overall (3-0 league), Westhill goes to Skaneateles Monday and looks to set up a showdown for first place in the OHSL Liberty division with Bishop Ludden Wednesday night at Alliance Bank Stadium. It will also play Jordan-Elbridge and Jamesville-DeWitt.
