Wherever one looked at Manley Field House during last Wednesday night’s Section III Class A championship meet, the Cicero-North Syracuse girls indoor track and field team was accumulating points.
And the Northstars didn’t stop until it had earned 135 points, outlasting Fayetteville-Manlius (106 points) and the rest of the field for the Class A team crown.
This sectional meet came just two days after the state qualifier, and a week after the Valentine’s Day snowstorm that pushed this event back a week.
Unfazed by neither the delay nor the sudden turnaround from the qualifier, CNS proceeded to build up its record everywhere, its versatility overcoming the total dominion F-M held over the top finishing spots in distance races.
CNS won two of the three relays. Janise Harper, Lauren Spink, Alana Hotchkiss and Monique Roberts combined for a time of 1:50.44 to hold off Rome Free Academy (1:50.73) and take the 4×200 relay.
With a bit more cushion, the Northstars also won the 4×400 when Spink, Harper, McKaye Neumeister and Gabby Catania teamed up for a clocking of 4:10.91, nearly three seconds better than F-M (4:13.61).
The Northstars dominated the field events. Roberts, who broke the Section III record in the pole vault at the state qualifier, also led a 1-2 sweep of the high jump, clearing 5 feet 2 inches as Gina Campagna (5 feet 1 inch) took second.
In the long jump, Keriann Borke went 16 feet 7 1/4 inches and Roberts, with 16 feet 4 1/4 inches, was third. Borke also was victorious in the triple jump, going 35 feet 1 1/2 inches, with Neumeister second as she leapt 33 feet 11 1/2 inches. Sommer Cloinger added to her shot-put titles, throwing it 39 feet 4 inches.
Harper, on her own, got third place in the 300-meter dash (43.13 seconds), while Borke was second (9.15 seconds) and Jasmine Thompson (9.25 seconds) got second and fourth, respectively, in the 55-meter hurdles.
Lindsey Raulli earned third place at 1,500 meters with a time of 5:03.52 and Taylor Wendler finished third at 3,000 meters in 10:46.81.
Neumeister was fourth in the 600-meter run (1:43.55) as Spink (1:44.28) got fifth place. Alicia Finger ran to fourth (3:13.44) in the 1,000-meter run as Lauren Slocum earned fifth place in 3:13.61. Slocum, Wendler, Finger and Ashley Messur teamed up to run third in the 4×800 relay in 10:07.61. Stephanie Borrowe and Tiffany Elderbroom were fifth and sixth, respectively, in the pole vault.
