Within a span of 13 days, the Oneida girls basketball team made two big splashes by defeating a pair of state-ranked foes.
First, Oneida knocked off Indian River in the Jan. 14 consolation game of the Alliance Bank Tournament.
As if that wasn’t enough, the Indians defended its home court in a big way last Friday night, defeating Clinton 48-38.
Clinton, the state’s no. 17-ranked Class B team, arrived with plenty of firepower, only to see it shut down.
Oneida’s defense was close to perfect in the first half, and it helped to build a 22-12 halftime advantage. All through the second half, the Indians would fight off Clinton’s charge by spreading things around.
Autumn McLain led with 14 points, including eight crucial free throws. Ashley Merrill had 10 points, while Becky Adams and Emma Adams each gained eight points. Oneida held Clinton’s top player, Cassie Maxam, to a reasonable total of 12 points.
The Indians hope this good work continues on the road this week, when it makes visits to Whitesboro and New Hartford.
