When the local boys indoor track and field teams returned to action after a two-week absence (the Jan. 10 Bob Grieve Invitational was snowed out), Solvay’s Greg Manning wasted little time stealing the spotlight.
In the boys 600-meter dash during last Thursday’s John Arcaro Invitational at Manley Field House, Manning engaged in a great duel with Baldwinsville’s Jason Houghtaling as both hit the line at close to the same time.
Manning finished in 1:07.27, to Houghtaling’s 1:07.47 — and with that time, the Solvay junior set a new Section III record for that event, breaking a 10-year-old mark.
For the night, the Bearcats got 38 points, taking fourth place, and missing third (Rome Free Academy, 39) by a single point as CNS (86 points) again finished in front.
Solvay gained eight points in the 4×400 relay as Songtha Cosby, Mike Acchione, Tyler Grim and Brendan Holiday earned a time of 3:38.93 and took second place as CNS (3:35.17) finished in front.
Victor Young also gained a runner-up finish, clearing 6 feet in the high jump as CNS’s Andy Kahl won by clearing 6 feet 6 inches.
On his own, Holiday was fourth in the 200-meter dash (24.19 seconds), while Cosby got fourth place in the long jump, going 19 feet 4 inches. Manning, Grim, Thomas Hook and Alexander Nappi combined to take fourth place in the 4×200 relay in 1:39.44.
