For the Baldwinsville girls basketball team, all that time spent in California during the last days of 2006 served a dual purpose.
Not only did the Bees meet elite competition in Anaheim, it also bonded together, making for much more cohesion when the whole party returned home.
After some time to rest, B’ville came out refreshed last Friday night, and proceeded to put up lots of offense in the course of a 69-62 victory over the Auburn Maroons.
Not impressed at all by Auburn’s 6-4 mark in the first half of the regular season, the Bees gradually increased the tempo as the first half went on, breaking out of a 13-13 tie and going to the break nursing a 30-24 edge.
Whatever Auburn tried to put together in the second half, B’ville was able to match it — and top it, too, eventually building its lead to 50-39 by the close of the third quarter before fending off a late Maroon rally.
Four B’ville players hit double figures. Taylor Frink led with 19 points, while Katelyn Charbonneau’s steady season continued as she poured in 14 points, most of it from four successful 3-point shots.
Kathleen Reidy and Sarah Hull each had 11 points, with Reidy hitting on three 3-pointers, while Jessica Johnson stepped up to earn nine points. For Auburn, Kelly Grinnell had 18 points, while Kaitlyn Liccion and Amanda Daum had 13 points apiece.
B’ville could reach the .500 mark if, on Tuesday night, it could win at Corcoran. The Bees are back home Friday night to battle Central Square.
