Following a week of intense practice, the Westhill girls basketball team fitted back into OHSL Liberty division play and resumed its normal winning behavior — but it wasn’t that easy. Hosting Skaneateles last Wednesday night, the Warriors had to fight all the way through to beat the Lakers 59-50. Normally a team Westhill has dominated in years past, Skaneateles matched the Warriors throughout the first half and left the hosts with a modest 27-25 lead at the break. Gradually, Westhill increased that margin, but it had to rely on its stars to produce — which they did. Carly Cooper’s 19 points included a trio of 3-pointers, while Lisa Olszewski worked inside to earn 18 points. Lauren Snyder and Annie O’Connor contributed eight points apiece. Skaneateles put three players in double figures, as Lauren Adams had 14 points, Caryn Crary added 11 points and Staci Dudden had 10 points. Going to Marcellus two nights later, the Warriors again had some first-half issues before an explosive third quarter led to a 56-36 win over the Mustangs. Still off its game a bit, Westhill had a slim 22-19 edge at the break, but all of that changed in a third-quarter blitz where the Warriors reeled off 20 unanswered points, shut out Marcellus, and ended all doubt about the result. Again, Cooper took care of the outside game, with 21 points, while Olszewski remained steady as she got 17 points. Marcellus also had some strong efforts, too, as Sarah Holden had 18 points and Alicia Hunt added 12 points. Westhill (4-1, 3-0 league) again goes on the road Wednesday, to Hannibal, then returns home Friday night to face Cazenovia as it attempts to keep the OHSL Liberty division lead.
