Dave Minor pulled up to his co-workers at Lockheed Martin with a trunk full of turkeys.
Minor, of Liverpool, was one of many Lockheed employees to take part in Take Your Turkey to Work Day, held Thursday Nov. 16. This is the year’s fourth event, and Minor has brought multiple turkeys every year.
“When we started, he brought three or four turkeys,” said Communications Specialist Chip Eschenfelder. “He’s brought one more every year.”
This year, Minor stuffed his car with a total of seven turkeys.
“I’m just thankful and lucky,” Minor said of his reasons for donating so much. “It’s something I can do to give back.”
Many of Minor’s co-workers followed his example, dropping off turkeys, hams and cash on their way into the office Thursday morning. The food and money went to the Interreligious Food Consortium, an organization that connects the hungry with appropriate resources and distributes food to over 70 local pantries. IFC board member Jim Golembiewski, who is employed by P&C Foods, brought a truck out to cart the materials to the IFC headquarters in Syracuse.
“Several food pantries will come and pick up the turkeys,” said Peg Stroman of the IFC. “We’ll distribute the rest to area shelters.”
Lockheed Martin employees and Interreligious Food Consortium board members got into the act Thursday, sounding off their turkey calls and accosting vehicles as they drove by. Jim Toczydlowski, head of dining services for LeMoyne College, even donned a turkey costume to attract attention and donations.
“These are very professional people,” Stroman said. “But here he is, out in his turkey suit.”
All in all, Lockheed collected 133 turkeys, three hams and $5 cash for the IFC.
