Gaining yet another big victory, the Baldwinsville boys golf team ventured to the Links at Erie Village last Thursday and emerged as the champions in the Section III Class A-1 qualifying tournament.
With a team total of 397, the Bees beat Auburn and West Genesee (both with 401) by four shots, with Liverpool (403) in fourth place.
Billy Markey played 18 holes better than anyone in the field, as he turned in a 71, even par, to beat Rome Free Academy’s Matt Campbell by three shots for individual honors.
Yet he couldn’t win it alone. Ryan Stanton shot a 77, while Shawn Yencha emerged to shoot an 80. Nick Tryniski posted an 81 to help out.
A day earlier, B’ville went to Oswego and, by a single shot, knocked off the Buccaneers 188-189.
Playing through some wet conditions at Oswego Country Club, Stanton and Markey each shot 36 for nine holes, while Billy Ward shot a 38.
This sort of consistency continued throughout the roster, which helped to negate the fact that Oswego’s Zach Foyette came up with a 33.
In a big match on Oct. 2 at Foxfire, the Bees continued to play at a high level, beating Rome Free Academy 179-205.
Markey covered nine holes in 33 shots, just ahead of Ward, who had a 35. Tim Tryniski shot a 36 and Stanton contributed a 37.
Moving its match with Utica Proctor to Drumlins did not bother the Bees at all as it went out and whipped the Raiders 201-249.
Tim Shanahan put up a 37, followed closely by Yencha, who had a 38. Tyler McArdell had a solid round of 40.
