Unlike some others, the Liverpool field hockey team did not spend its week of non-league play ducking tough competition.

Instead, the Warriors went in the other direction, hosting Cazenovia on Monday night and working hard to pull out a 1-0 overtime victory, handing the Lakers its first defeat of the season.

Cazenovia arrived with a 10-0 mark, having surrendered just four goals all season while rising to the top of the East division. However, it had not face the kind of competition Liverpool (8-2-1) deals with on a regular basis.

Yet all through regulation, the Lakers kept the Warriors off the board. A quick, effective defense broke up early rushes, and when Liverpool began to swam in the second half and draw a series of penalty corners, Cazenovia turned them all away as its goalie, Margaux Hoagland, made nine saves.

In overtime, teams go to a seven-on-seven format, freeing up the field for more rushes. Quickly, the Warriors forced another penalty corner and, just 1:25 into OT, Nicole Lamison fed it to Leah Lazarz, whose point-blank shot eluded Hoagland and ended the contest.

The Warriors were more than eager to face Cazenovia after a week of non-league games that offered various challenges.

This started with Liverpool blasting Homer 7-1 last Tuesday night, a rout where the Warriors put up a 4-0 edge by halftime and did not let up.

Jennifer VanderMeulen, Brooke Visheowski and Nicole Lamison each finished with two goals, as VanderMeulen and Lindsey Nelson put up two assists apiece. Leah Lazarz added a goal. Lamison and Sable Eldridge had single assists.

Heavy rain and lightning wiped out the end Thursday’s game at Cortland, but the Warriors returned Saturday to pick up a 1-0 victory over Whitesboro.

Foreshadowing her Cazenovia heroics, Lazarz had the game’s only goal, in the second half, with Visheowski earning an assist. Megan O’Connor’s 11 saves helped Whitesboro stay in it.

Following the Cazenovia win, the Warriors were off until Friday afternoon, when it pays a visit to Auburn.
