On two different fronts, the Fayetteville-Manlius cross country team might be working on another special season.

Not content with getting one title out of last Saturday’s trip to the McQuaid Invitational near Rochester, the Hornets earned both championships in the most prestigious divisions — and were most impressive on the female side.

In the girls AAA division at Genesee Valley Park, the Hornets finished with 42 points, well clear of West Genesee, who was second with 105 points. Liverpool (119 points) was third.

F-M had seven of the top 22 finishers. Mackenzie Carter led the way, as she ran to second place in a time of 17 minutes, 42 seconds, just six seconds behind WG’s Elizabeth McMahon.

Kathryn Buchan ran to fifth place, in 18:37. Jessica Hauser got 11th place (18:59), while Rachael Welter was 15th (19:10) and Courtney Chapman rounded out the scoring by finishing 19th, in 19:20.

Running later in the afternoon, F-M’s boys ignored the wet and slow conditions to three-peat in the AAA division at McQuaid, getting 74 points to beat out Liverpool (104 points) for the title.

Mainly, that was because the Hornets went 1-2 at the front. No one could catch Tommy Gruenewald as he covered the Genesee Valley course in 14:51, the best time of the entire meet. Right behind him, Geoff King landed in second place, with a clocking of 15:06.

Well behind them, Luke Fitzgibbons helped push the rest of his team along as he ran to 13th place, in 15:38. Ben Kimple was 27th (16:15), while Andy Sargrad took 32nd place, in 16:22.

With McQuaid looming, F-M warmed up by taking over last Wednesday’s meet with Auburn, beating the Maroons 19-42 on the boys side and 15-50 on the girls side to take over first place in the league on both fronts.

Even with the presence of Auburn stars Chris Mason and Scott Garrett, who finished fourth and fifth, respectively, the boys Hornets still came out on top.

King prevailed, his time of 16:32 two seconds better than Gruenewald. Fitzgibbons was third, in 16:41.

Kimple, who ran to sixth place (17:33), led the next pack as Sargrad ran seventh (17:41), Eric Snavely was ninth (18:17) and Ben Sargrad finished 10th, in 18:21.

F-M was even more dominant in the girls meet against Auburn, seizing each of the top seven spots in a strong display of depth.

Molly Malone won the race, in 20:32, as Carter eased into second place (20:43). Welter was third (20:53), while Buchan (20:55) and Hilary Hooley (20:57) rounded out the top five.

Chapman, in sixth place (21:04), was just ahead of Catie Caputo (21:12), while Erica Losito (21:40) and Dana Gould (21:56) had solid showings.
