Bouncing back in a big way from its loss to Cicero-North Syracuse, the Baldwinsville girls cross country team used all of its depth to pull out a 27-28 victory over state-ranked West Genesee last Wednesday afternoon.
This was part of a three-way meet at Durgee that also involved Henninger. The Bees swept past the Black Knights, 15-50.
Amanda Sprague would lead her side, running to second place in 19 minutes, 26 seconds as WG’s top-ranked runner, Elizabeth McMahon, won in 18:46.
Megan O’Connor, who ran to fourth place in 19:47, led the crucial stretch where three B’ville runners finished on top of each other.
Esther Hatalla was fifth and Danae Polsin was sixth, each of them finishing in 19:57, while Ashley Shaheen, in fifth place (20:28), sewed up the victory.
The boys meet carried far less suspense, as B’ville breezed to a 19-38 win over West Genesee and also toppled Henninger, 19-44.
Four of the top five slots went to the Bees. Brian Lang led the way as he won the individual race in 16:21, while Cory Greczyn was second, in 16:33. Seth Jackson was fourth (17:03), while Jason Houghtaling gained fifth place in 17:22. Adam Pacheck earned an eighth-place clocking of 17:53.
B’ville would get a total sweep of Saturday’s East Syracuse-Minoa Invitational, winning both titles in impressive style.
On the girls end, B’ville had 41 points, nearly twice the total of Canastota, who was second with 81 points. Cazenovia (83 points) was third.
Among individuals, Sprague was second, in 20:13.2, well behind ESM’s Leah Andrianos, who won in 19:17.0.
O’Connor provided the depth as she was sixth, in 20:41. Hatalla got ninth place, in 20:54.4, while Polsin ran to 11th (20:57.5) and Shaheen, in 13th place, secured the victory with her time of 21:05.8.
To claim the title in the boys meet at ESM, the Bees needed 38 points, prevailing by a big margin over the host Spartans, who were second with 68 points.
Lang ran away from Canastota’s Rob Argentine and won the individual title, his time of 16:49.1 well clear of Argentine (17:03.5), who was second.
Greczyn pushed his way to third place, in 17:07.7, while Jackson, in ninth place (18:06.3) also cracked the top 10. Pacheck was 12th (18:21.5), Houghtaling was 13th (18:26.8) and Chris Wicks (18:40.1) was 20th.
