Four different area high school bowling teams made their way back into competition after two weeks of rest and practice during the holiday school break.
Fayetteville-Manlius got the first action last week, and the girls Hornets handled West Genesee 3-0 in last Monday’s match at Green Lakes Bowl.
It was particularly special for Shelby Miner. Starting with a 192, Miner tore it up with games of 250 and 240 to earn a season-best 682 series.
Help came from Samantha Estock, whose 213 game completed a 527 series, and Kendra Elliot, who posted a 513 set as Hannah Smith earned a 467 series.
F-M’s boys lost, 2-1, to West Genesee. Kevin Winschel shot a 627 series (high game 248) and Aidan Koss got a 616 set. The Wildcats got twin 604 series from Richard Wituszynski and Bobby Bidwell.
Three days later, the Hornets went up against Baldwinsville at B’ville Sports Bowl. Five F-M boys bowlers shot series of 529 or better, but no one topped the 587 set from Koss as the Bees, who won 3-0, got a 695 series from Tanner Rozcyzko, plus solid series from Dylan Love (611) and Dylan Williams (605).
On the girls side, Elliot shot 225, 191 and 193 in her 609 series, with Miner (470 series) beating out Smith (461 series). But the Bees still beat F-M 3-0, with Madison Hass shooting a 257 as part of a 646 series.
Then F-M challenged Liverpool on Friday, but was unable to earn a point in either match against the Warriors despite some fine individual efforts.
The boys Hornets had Winschel shoot a 627 series and Koss a 594 series against Liverpool, who saw Dylan Roberson shoot a 276 game in his 662 series as Josh Winzens had a 620 set.
In the girls 3-0 loss, Miner shot a 545 series ahead of Estock (499 series) and Elliot (495 series), topped by the 619 set from Liverpool’s Ashley Hardy and 577 series from Makenzi Ormsby.
East Syracuse Minoa ran up against Fulton last Wednesday, with the boys Spartans earning a big 2-1 victory over the Red Raiders.
Tyler Talarico shot 10 strikes in his opening 288 game on his way to a 676 series. Brett Smith earned a 601 series, with Chris Bayly adding a 560 set as ESM overcame a 717 series from Fulton’s Mitch Donaldson.
On the girls side, ESM fell to Fulton 3-0, with America Carhart’s 501 series by far the best among the Spartans. Alexis Ingersoll once more led the undefeated (8-0) Red Raiders, her 227 game leading to a 578 set.
Up against Central Square on Thursday, ESM took a 3-0 loss, with Talarico getting a 637 series at Green Acres Bowl and Bayly adding a 567 series.
Central Square’s Dimitri Queior earned a 709 series with games of 247, 226 and 236, helped by Jayden Allen (643 series) and Kevin Radzieski, whose 268 game kicked off a 604 series.
Once again, the girls Spartans were unable to get a point during its 3-0 defeat to Central Square, though Carhart, helped by a 235 second game, improved to a 596 series, ahead of the 548 set by the Redhawks’ Victoria Ackley.
There was a head-to-head clash last Tuesday at Strike-N-Spare Lanes between Christian Brothers Academy and Bishop Grimes, with the two sides splitting their matches.
On the boys end, it was the Cobras blanking the Brothers 7-0, Grimes led by Joe Belton’s 499 series as Ben Schultz earned a 471 series. CBA got a 450 series from Garrett Bowman.
CBA’s girls beat Grimes 7-0 to improve to 6-1 on the season as Eliana Occhino led the way, her 225 game in the middle of a 578 series. Cadence Malicek earned a three-game total of 502, just ahead of Rachel Farella’s 487 series.
Staying in good form on Thursday, CBA’s girls handled Solvay 7-0, with Malicek’s 497 series capped by a 206 game. Sophie Schultz had a 449 series and Farella added a 419 set.
But the CBA boys lost to Solvay by that same score, Tavish Johnston earning a 444 series for the Brothers, but far behind the Bearcats’ Russ Tarbell (575 series) and Ethan Bigelow (574 series) as Solvay improved to 6-0.
Grimes’ boys swept Altmar-Parish-Williamstown 7-0 on Thursday, led this time by Schultz, whose 207 came in the middle of a 546 series. On Friday, both Grimes teams lost 7-0 to Homer and CBA fell 4-3 to APW.
