Jillian Vogl returned to the spot of her greatest individual moment and, once again, starred for the Cazenovia field hockey team in a championship contest.
Thanks to Vogl’s pair of goals, the top-seeded Lakers ousted no. 2 seed Mount Markham 3-1 in Saturday’s Section III Class C final at Cicero-North Syracuse’s Bragman Stadium.
It marks Cazenovia’s sixth consecutive sectional title, five of them at the Class C level. And it came at a venue quite familiar to all the Lakers – for it was here, one year ago, that it won its first-ever state championship over Pierson-Bridgehampton 1-0 in overtime.
Vogl put in the championship-winning goal in that state final, and those good vibes remained as Cazenovia came back to the CNS turf to seek the Class C title against Mount Markham, who arrived at this final with a 16-2 record and had beaten Ilion and Little Falls in the sectional playoffs.
An active first half saw the Mustangs get on the board first with Emily Dekanek’s goal, fed by Courtney Bastian, 4:21 into the contest.
However, Vogl turned things around by getting the tying goal just a minute later and, with 9:05 left in the half, returned to beat Mount Markham goalie Hannah Douglas for what proved to be the go-ahead tally. Cazenovia led, 2-1, at halftime.
Another goal in the second half, from Rachel Nourse on a penalty stroke with 10:24 to play, helped the Lakers pull clear, as did an airtight defense that, led by Jessy Silfer, Maggie Carpenter, SarahRose Gabor and Ashley Winn, kept Mount Markham from getting too many opportunities in the late stages.
Emily Willard picked up an assist on one of Vogl’s goals. Cazenovia took most of the game’s shots, as Douglas had to make 10 saves to keep it tight.
Cazenovia now plays Class D champion Morrisville-Eaton, who beat Sauquoit Valley 2-1 in its sectional final, in Tuesday’s state qualifier. The winner there advances to the regional finals and could get back to Bragman Stadium, because the state final four will be held there again Nov. 19 and 20.
