Still harboring post-season hopes, the Skaneateles girls soccer team had to finish strong – which it did, just enough to still play this week.
The Lakers’ dreams nearly ended last Monday, at Jordan-Elbridge, but a late rally helped it get past the Eagles 3-2 in overtime.
Skaneateles controlled most of the flow of play and led, 1-0, at halftime. J-E caught up in the second half, though, as Katie Byrnes earned both of the Eagles’ goals.
So it went to overtime tied, 2-2. Despite a supreme effort from J-E goalie Kali Kimik, who finished with 24 saves, the Lakers earned the go-ahead goal and held on. Carly Davis earned two goals for Skaneateles as Bridget Field got the other goal.
Two nights later, Skaneateles played another overtime match, at Solvay, but this time it ended in a 1-1 draw.
The Lakers were behind, 1-0, thanks to Alexis Bandera’s first-half goal. But in the second half Field, unassisted, pulled her team even, and it remained that way. Rachel Hurley had a strong effort in the net, recording 10 saves, one more than Bearcats counterpart Chelsea Root.
Despite finishing at 5-9-2, Skaneateles still made it to the Class B tournament. As the no. 13 seed, it met no. 4 seed Clinton in Tuesday afternoon’s opening round, with the winner to get Ilion or Holland Patent in the quarterfinals later this week.
