Quite unlike the powerhouse on its way to a state championship 12 months ago, the Skaneateles boys soccer team is having to earn its own name and face plenty of adversity along the way.

And it appeared the Lakers were doing so, riding a two-game win streak before taking a 1-0 defeat to West Genesee on Friday night.

Through the first half, it remained 0-0, and Skaneateles played on fairly even terms with its Class AA opposition, getting plenty of chances to move out in front.

However, WG goalie Dylan Condon stopped all eight of the Lakers’ shots, and while Erik Pola had six saves, he could not keep the Wildcats’ Stefanos Stamoulacatos from putting the game’s only goal in the net during the second half.

Long before this, the Lakers began the week’s play with a stirring comeback last Monday against Homer, rallying to beat the Trojans 3-2.

Trailing 2-1 at the half, Skaneateles, staring at a 2-4 mark, would dominate the second half. Alex Brownlee, with one goal and one assist, led the push as Ryan Higman and Sam Goodell. B.J. Kerr added an assist, too. Erik Pola recorded seven saves.

It proved smoother on Wednesday afternoon, when the Lakers shut out Jordan-Elbridge 5-0. Even in that game, though, Skaneateles only led 1-0 at halftime before putting together its best offensive surge of the season in the late going.

Tyler Strods, with one goal and one assist, was one of five different Laker players to find the net. Goodell, Brownlee, J.J. Gregg and Will Bersani had the other goals, while Higman and Jeff Kringer earned assists.

Now at 4-4 (3-1 league) following the WG defeat, Skaneateles play Tuesday at Solvay, the prelude to a big Thursday home test against OHSL Liberty division leader Westhill.
