Skaneateles — Another big week in this memorable season for the Skaneaeteles wrestling team culminated with Saturday’s dual meet where the host Lakers took on four foes – and beat them all to improve its record in head-to-head matches this winter to a perfect 20-0.
In order, Skaneateles toppled Auburn 55-21, held off East Syracuse Minoa 50-33 in the closest of the four contests, cruised to a 63-21 victory over Oneida and, to cap it off, got past Cato-Meridian 62-21.
Seven different Lakers went 4-0 for the day. J.W. Simmons did so at 99 pounds, as did Christian Daley (113 pounds), Nevan Rourke (120 pounds), Joey Brillo (126 pounds), Mike Goetzmann (145 pounds), Pat Greenfield (195 pounds) and T.J. Greenfield (220 pounds).
Joey McIntyre, wrestling at 182 pounds, had a 3-1 mark, with Ian Frackelton (160 pounds) and Lucas Sherman (160 pounds) each getting 2-1 records. Hannah Drake was a perfect 2-0 at 106 pounds.
Prior to that, the Lakers warmed up by having a non-league match against visiting Onondaga last Wednesday night, where it won the first six bouts of the night and cruised from there to earn a 57-24 victory over the Tigers.
In between early forfeits to Daley and Brillo, Nevan Rourke wrestled at 120 and earned one of his fastest falls of the season, pinning Steven Moses in 41 seconds.
Three more wins followed, starting with Danny O’Connell, at 132 pounds, who pinned Cole Allen late in the second period. Matt Goetzmann (138) needed 2:47 to pin Dan Corbett, and in that exact same time his brother, Mike Goetzmann, pinned 145-pound opponent Dalton Currie.
OCS got on the board with three straight wins, the closest of them Dannell Trammell topping Frackelton 4-1, but Pat Greenfield (182 pounds) stopped that run with a second-period fall over Ethan Arroyo as McIntyre took 2:51 to finish off Nathan Pitre. After a forfeit to T.J. Greenfield, Simmons gave Skaneateles one more mat win, hanging on for a 5-2 decision over Dylan Price.
On Wednesday, Skaneateles meets Syracuse’s Institute of Technology Central, making up the meet snowed out earlier this month as it attempts to wrap up an outright OHSL Liberty division regular-season championship, its first league title since 1981. Then it’s on to Onondaga High School for the OHSL Liberty/Patriot meet Saturday at 10 a.m.
