Christian Brothers Academy’s track and field teams had the central event of its season when it hosted Friday’s annual Brother Basilian Invitational, an event that included competitors from East Syracuse Minoa, Bishop Grimes and Manlius-Pebble Hill.
Host CBA gained wins in several events on the girls side, including the 200-meter dash, where Anna Schug prevailed in 26.40 seconds, the only time under 27 seconds. Schug, Claire Bargabos, Olivia Morganti and Ryleigh Peterson were third in the 4×400 relay in 4:10.18.
Nafysa Williams won, too, in the high jump, where she was the only competitor to clear 5 feet 1 inch. ESM’s Jennah Ferrari was sixth, topping 4’8”. Kiana Ferguson, with a long jump of 15’7 ½”, was a close second to Tully’s Lexi Hamilton (15’9”) as Ferguson also finished fourth in the 100-meter dash in 13.37 seconds.
Lea Kyle got to third place in the 3,000-meter run in 11:29.49. Kat Fletcher, Lucy Person, Grace O’Connor and Bri Pucci gave CBA a third-place time of 10:52.32 in the 4×800 relay, with ESM fourth in 10:59.54.
ESM’s Natalie Marra dominated the girls 1,500-meter run, prevailing in 4:48.53 as no one else broke the five-minute mark. Her Spartans teammate, Mia Montgomery, prevailed in the triple jump, going 34’11 ½” to beat CBA’s Elissa Kempisty, who was second with 32’9 ¼”.
Lindsay Crego gave ESM a third win in the discus with a throw of 90’2 ¾”, also going 29’7” in the shot put to finish second to Weedsport’s Kayley Dillabough (32’9 ½”). Also for the Spartans, Mackenzie Bourdon was fifth in the 100-meter hurdles in 17.75 seconds and sixth (1:11.86) in the 400 hurdles, two spots ahead of Kyle.
Jordan Sloan led Bishop Grimes with a fifth-place finish in the 400-meter dash in 1:022.33 behind Bargabos (1:01.16) in fourth place. Grimes also had Abby Wilkinson finish seventh in the 800-meter run and Sloan take eighth place in the 200 behind Schug.
On the boys side, CBA’s Tom SanGiacomo beat ESM’s Abdullah Mujcic, 11.52 seconds to 11.64, in the 100 sprint, but Mujcic retaliated by taking the 200 in 23.56 seconds as teammate Jordan Hodge was fifth in 24.55 seconds. Mujcic also was second (19’4 ¾”) to Weedsport’s Riley Spingler (21’ ½”) in the long jump.
Not content with that, the Spartans also had Jeremy McGrath win the 110 high hurdles in 15.26 seconds, chased by Isaiah Brooks (16.27 seconds), who was fourth, and CBA’s Pat Carey in eighth place, though Carey improved to sixth in the 400 hurdles in 1:01.92. Brooks later threw the shot put 40’10 ½” to finish fifth.
In the 4×100 relay, CBA won as Brett VanPatten, Jake VanPatten, Gavin Collins and Jaden Mitchell edged Jordan-Elbridge, 46.33 seconds to 46.50, with Mitchell also sixth in the long jump.
Nihkil Reddy, Tim Schmitt and Ethan Kinney joined SanGiacomo as the Brothers finished second (3:37.54) to Homer (3:31.34) in the 4×400. CBA was fourth (9:04.80) and ESM sixth (9:12.78) in the 4×800, where Grimes was eighth (9:14.19) for its best relay finish.
Dominic Morganti ran 3,200 meters in 10:02.23, getting second place, with Grimes’ Chris Larson (10:34.15) sixth as Carthage star Noah Affolder won in 9:35.82.
CBA saw Tyler Leonard unleash a triple jump of 38’9 ½”, second only to Homer’s Christian Pittsley (40’ ¼”), with ESM’s Hunter Bruner sixth by going 37’9 ¾”. The Spartans’ Connor Harrigan cleared 5’8” in the high jump for third place, with Jesse Hodge and Tomaso Mondovi clearing 10 feet to tie for fifth in the pole vault.
The Brothers also saw Zach Walsh get sixth place in the 400 sprint in 54.46 seconds. Reddy was sixth in the 800 in 2:08 flat, just behind ESM’s Matt Young (2:05.21) in fifth place as Keeney finished ninth. Spartans eighth-grader Nick Berg was sixth in the mile in 4:47.83.
Just before that, CBA met Skaneateles in last Wednesday’s head-to-head OHSL Liberty division meet, with the Brothers taking a 91-50 defeat to the Lakers.
Peterson won twice, going 1:02.4 in the 400 sprint but also prevailing in the 3,000 in 11:41.5. Peterson also paired with Schug, Kyle and Olivia Morganti, to take the 4×400 relay in 4:11.9. Ferguson claimed the long jump, going 15’8”, while Kempisty put up a top triple jump of31’2”. Nafysa Williams cleared 4’8” to earn first place in the high jump.
In the boys meet, CBA prevailed with two wins from three different runners. SanGiacomo took the 100 (11.4 seconds) and 200 (23.1 seconds), with Dominic Morganti gaining first in the mile (4:51.1) and 800 (2:16.7) as Carey won the 110 high hurdles in 16.4 seconds and the 400 hurdles in 1:06.6.
All of this, plus Nihkil Reddy’s win in the 3,200-meter run in 11:14.4, helped the Brothers overcome the Lakers’ sweep of field events. Also, Morganti, Schmitt, Keeney and Josh Pucci and Brendan Keeney prevailed in the 4×800 relay in 9:10.2.
