Onondaga — Though it only got in half the work it wanted to, the Fayetteville-Manlius indoor track and field teams still ended the week feeling quite good.
Five days after the John Arcaro Invitational was snowed out, the Hornets went to last Saturday’s Fred Kirschenheiter Memorial Invitational at SRC Arena and prevailed in both sides of the morning session.
F-M’s girls earned 104 points to fend off a strong challenge from West Genesee (83 points), while in the boys meet the Hornets needed 81 points to edge past Baldwinsville (75 points) for the top spot. Christian Brothers Academy was sixth in the girls portion and seventh in the boys portion of that same meet, with East Syracuse Minoa taking sixth place in the boys meet and eighth in the boys meet.
Going 1-2 in the 1,000-meter run, F-M’s Sophie Ryan won in two minutes, 56.15 seconds, while Kaitlyn Neal was second in 2:58.8. It was the same in the 3,000-meter run, where Samantha Levy (10:10.47) pulled away from Palmer Madsen (10:47.75) to prevail, with Reilly Madsen (11.04.13) in fifth.
Ryan, Neal, Phoebe White and Jenna Farrell rolled to a 4×800 relay victory in 9:36.81, nearly a full minute ahead of the field. White (4:57.83) and Farrell (5:01.71) were second and third, respectively, behind WG’s Ashley Benson (4:48.10) in the 1,500-meter run. F-M also finished fifth in the 4×400 relay in 4:48.67, with ESM (4:53.60) sixth.
CBA’s wins included the 55-meter hurdles, where Skylar Decker prevailed in 9.44 seconds and F-M’s Sydney O’Dell (9.80 seconds) was fourth. Later, Kiana Ferguson, in 7.66 seconds, edged Skaneateles’ Amanda Wetmore (7.67) to win the 55-meter dash, with F-M’s Meaghan Howe third in 7.78 seconds and her teammate, Cady Barns, fifth in 7.92 seconds.
Anna Schug was second in the 600-meter run in 1:43.49, finishing ahead of F-M teammates Christy Berge’ in third (1:44.34) and Susan Bansbach in fifth (1:47.89). Schug, Ferguson, Claire Bargabos and Olivia Morganti were second (1:51.63), just behind Skaneateles (1:51.14), in the 4×200 relay, with F-M’s quartet of Berge’, Barns, Howe and Phoebe Lindabury third in 1:54.66.
continued — Barns did better in the long jump, taking third place with 15 feet 7 ¾ inches as ESM’s Mia Montgomery was fourth (15’7 ½”) and Ferguson (15’6”) was fifth.
The Spartans’ Lindsay Crego took third in the shot put with a heave of 27’3” as F-M’s Sophia Jones (26’10”) was fourth. CBA’s Lea Kyle got fourth place in the 1,000 in 3:17.13, while Ryleigh Peterson was sixth in the 300-meter dash in 46.08 seconds. Febe Oley was fourth in the pole vault, clearing 6’6”.
Moving to the boys side, F-M started to stir in the mile, where Bryan Geehrer won in 4:23.36 and Patrick Perry was third in 4:28.32. Geehrer and Perry joined Jack Boltman and Sean Donlon in a 4×800 thriller where the Hornets, in 8:52.74, edged Baldwinsville (8:53.18) by less than a second for another victory.
Just as important, F-M made inroads in field events thanks to Chibu Ezidegwu, who triumphed in the high jump as the only competitor to clear 6 feet. ESM’s Isaiah Brooks was third, ahead of the Hornets’ Romello Mitchell, though both cleared 5’6”. Vincent Perry, clearing 10 feet, was second in the pole vault to Fabius-Pompey’s Tom Sayles (10’9”).
Though it didn’t win in the 3,200-meter run, the Hornets still had Max Perry second in 10:27.76, with Matt Tripp third (10:35.84) and Eli Capri fifth (10:44.30), adding up to 16 points. Then, in the 4×200, F-M finished second as Peyton Burnett, Jack Grifo, Armondo Adrian and Connor Florczyk posted 1:39.83, just behind Skaneateles (1:39.59) at the line. Florczyk went on to earn a third-place long jump of 19’3 ½”.
For ESM, Jeremy McGrath was a close second (8.07 seconds) to Baldwinsville’s Evan Donhauser (8.03 seconds) in the 55 hurdles, with CBA’s Pat Carey sixth, the same finish Carey earned in the high jump. The Spartans also saw Jim Kenyon get third place in the 1,000 in 2:47.10, while Brooks was fourth in the 55 sprint in seven seconds flat and Matt Young took fifth place in the mile in 4:44.33.
As for CBA, Tom SanGiacomo went 6.93 seconds to hold off Auburn’s Devante House (6.95 seconds) and claim the 55 sprint. Carey, SanGiacomo, Brendan Keeney and Dominic Morganti paired up to finish second in the 4×400 relay in 3:46.36, just behind Westhill-Bishop Ludden (3:45.60) as F-M finished fifth. Earlier, Morganti (2:47.36) edged out Keeney (2:47.39) for fourth place in the 1,000.
