An interesting mix of local track and field athletes made their way to the University at Albany and appeared in this weekend’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association championship meet.
Westhill-Bishop Ludden’s Jordan Roland had last appeared at Albany in March, when his Westhill basketball team, fresh off a second straight state Class B title, lost to Buffalo Park School in the Federation semifinals.
Now, in the last act of his high school career before heading to George Washington University, Roland took part in the boys pentathlon and, dealing with weather delays, still set personal marks in the 110 high hurdles (16.05 seconds) and shot put (37 feet 11 ½ inches), while also clearing 5’11 ½” in the high jump that put him fourth among Division II competitors through three events.
On Saturday, Roland remained in contention and, in the closing 1,500-meter run, blazed to a time of four minutes, 13.11 seconds to lead all competitors. That gave him a final total of 3,336 points, putting him second in Division II (small schools) and fourth overall, as Maine-Endwell’s Mike Palmer won with 3,540 points.
Jordan-Elbridge junior Abby Gugel also earned a medal. In the girls 3,000-meter run on Friday night, Gugel took third place among Division II runners with a time of 10 minutes, 15.78 seconds, beating out Skaneateles rival Kaitlyn Neal (10:18.30) as Briarcliff’s Caroline Pennacchio won the Division II portion in 10:13.43, just 2.35 seconds ahead of Gugel.
Competing twice, Gugel’s teammate, Rebekah Blonski took part in the girls Division II (small school) 100-meter hurdles and long jump. In the 100 hurdles, Blonski’s time of 17.83 seconds left her unable to reach the finals.
Then, in Saturday’s long jump, Blonski, who had gone as far as 17 feet 5 ¼ inches this spring, fouled on all three attempts as Holy Names’ Leah Moran won by going 18 feet.
In the girls pentathlon, Solvay’s Katie Harrington picked up 1,472 points over the course of the first three events on Friday. Moving up throughout Saturday’s activities, Harrington finished with 2,686 points, taking sixth place in Division II as South Jefferson’s Skylar Pastor won the state championship by getting 3,221 points.
West Genesee had Josh Mattice taking part in the Division I (large school) shot put, while Westhill-Ludden’s Donovan Whipple was in the Division II shot put.
Mattice, whose season-best throw went 49 feet 1 inches, went 47 feet 3 ½” here, putting him in 15th place, with his other throws going 45’9 ¼” and 46’4 ¼”. North Rockland’s Eric Favors won with 61’6”.
Whipple, trying to match his season-best 45’1 ¾”, could only get to 43’7’ ¾” in his first attempt, the others going 43’1 and 42’5”. That put Whipple in 11th place, with Chapel Field’s Robert Detz claiming the state title with a toss of 58’11 ¼”.
