In the boys track and field meet between Cazenovia and Westhill-Bishop Ludden last Tuesday afternoon, the Lakers got close to making it a sweep with the league champion girls side, but fell to the Warriors by a 76-66 margin.
And this happened despite a slew of Cazenovia wins in individual events, including Sawyer Hunt sweeping the shot put (43 feet) and discus, where his throw of 106’2” edged teammate Nate Spangler, who threw it 105’10”.
“Sawyer has consistently improved in technique and strength, and is living proof that dedication pays off,” said Cazenovia head coach Mark Evans.
Sean Satchwell also won twice, claiming the 800 in 2:03 flat and, in the mile, going 4:43 flat to beat Westhill-Ludden’s Garnet Remillard (4:45.1).
Alex Devine won the 200 in 24.4 seconds and paired with Satchwell, Alec Boone and Ryan O’Herien to edge the Warriors, 3:43.0 to 3:43.1, in a tense 4×400 relay. Dominick King was victorious in the 400 hurdles in 1:04.6.
Evans said that Satchwell and Nichols have both proven themselves as leaders on and off the track, from getting high grades in the classroom to helping the coaches with practice and meet schedules.
While O’Herien (11.6 seconds) and Tom McNerney (12.0 seconds) went 1-2 in the 100, Walker Nichols took the 110 high hurdles in 15.4 seconds and added a long jump victory by going 19’10”. Devine was second in the triple jump (38’7 ½”) and Nichols was second (5’10”) in the high jump, each time with Westhill-Ludden’s Jordan Roland taking the top spot.
This followed the May 2 Don Howard Invitational at Cooperstown where Cazenovia, with 84 points, finished second in the 13-team field behind Cobleskill, with some milestones along the way.
Satchwell, in 4:34.58, broke Rob Taube’s seven-year-old school record (4:34.87) in the mile while winning that race, also claiming the 800 in 2:06.01 at that same meet and even took fifth place in the triple jump, showing off his versatility.
At that same meet, Devine got to second (39’3 ½”) in the triple jump and fourth in the 200 (24.10 seconds), and O’Herien was fourth in the 100 in 11.89 seconds.
The Lakers’ quartet of O’Herien, Devine, Nichols and Tom McNerney second in the 4×100 relay in 45.37 seconds, beaten by Cobleskill’s track-record 44.43 seconds. Cazenovia also was fourth in the 4×800 and fifth in the 4×400.
Nichols, at Cooperstown, finished third in the 110 hurdles (15.73 seconds), fourth in the long jump (19 feet) and fifth in the high jump, while McNerney took second in the 400 sprint in 56.59 seconds.
Hoke was sixth in the 110 and 400 hurdles at Cooperstown, while Hunt finished fourth in the shot put, heaving it 41’4 ½”. Christian Winkler (8 feet) and Dan McKillop (7 feet) were fifth and sixth, respectively, in the pole vault.
