Baldwinsville’s wrestling team is large enough to, at times, split into two groups that can compete at different large-scale meets on the same day.
For example, as some of the Bees were competing last Saturday in the Andersen Tournament at Cicero-North Syracuse, others went to the Blue Devil Duals at Cato-Meridian – and B’ville won that tournament, sweeping all five of its opponents.
Some of the matches were lopsided, like an 89-0 shutout over Jordan-Elbridge and an 87-0 shutout over Red Jacket. Other times, the opponent picked up points, but the Bees still won big, stopping Mynderse Academy (Seneca Falls) 64-15 and Moravia 59-15.
Only in the match against host Cato-Meridian did B’ville get any kind of serious challenge, but when it counted, the Bees got the points it needed to prevail 48-32 over the Blue Devils.
After forfeits to Jake Naples (113 pounds), Tyler Patrick (120 pounds) and Tom Fuzia (132 pounds), B’ville’s first win on the mat came at 145 pounds, where Spencer Woods pinned Clayton Powers in just 27 seconds. Sam Candee (152 pounds) followed with a second-period fall over Jason Munski.
Offering a response, Cato won the next four bouts, two of them pins, with B’ville’s Nick Stanton (195 pounds) taking an 11-9 defeat to Seth House. This, combined with Tyler Toomey’s 11-8 loss to 138-pound opponent Jeff Taylor, pulled the Blue Devils within four, 30-26, with four bouts left.
But the Bees put things away when Mike Spicer, at 220 pounds, pinned Keith Hendrix in 2:48 and Austin Reinhardt (285 pounds) finished off Nick Schmidt in 1:54. Zach Hahn, in the 106-pound finale, would claim a forfeit.
The Bees’ match at Fayetteville-Manlius Wednesday night was postponed by winter weather, which means it would return to action Saturday in the General Brown Duals.
With the whole team together, B’ville went 4-1, starting out by beating Ogdensburg Free Academy 55-20 and routing Beaver River 65-6. Then the Bees held off Carthage 46-33 and nearly got shutout in pounding Watertown IHC 72-3 to go to 4-0 on the day.
But in the decisive match against host General Brown, B’ville could not keep up, the Lions prevailing 51-24. Sam Candee was named the Bees’ Most Outstanding Wrestler for the meet, and it could look ahead to hosting Central Square on Wednesday before venturing to the Phoenix Round Robin this Saturday for its last contests of 2014.
