With one more chance to compete in front of a home crowd, the Baldwinsville girls swim team nearly got a signature win in Wednesday’s regular-season finale against Cicero-North Syracuse. When the final race was done, though, the Bees and Northstars were in a 47-47 tie. And it took winning the last three races for B’ville to pull even. The rally started in a close 100-yard backstroke, where Amanda Johnson and C-NS’s Breanna Ruffrage went to the finish line close together. In a time of one minute, 4.72 seconds, Johnson prevailed by 0.31 seconds over Ruffrage. Then it went to the 100 breaststroke, where Lauren Burchill steadily pulled away in a time of 1:14.02 to beat the Northstars’ Jamie Rolf (1:16.74). Then, in the closing 400 freestyle relay, Johnson, paired with Noelle Staso, Brooke Atkinson and Lauren Guild, put up a quick time of 4:02.27 and helped the Bees pull even. Way back a the start of the meet, B’ville had also won the 200 medley relay, with Burchill helping Atkinson, Johnson and Staso speed to first place in 1:58.51. Following that, Staso roared to a victory in the 200 freestyle in 2:04.43, with C-NS’s Lauren Thorne second in 2:09.52. In the 100 butterfly, the Bees went 1-2, Brooke Atkinson taking the victory in 1:02.55 and Emma Atkinson (1:05.92) making her way to the runner-up spot. This helped Brooke Atkinson make up for a close 200 individual medley race where, in 2:22.88, she finished right behind C-NS’s Brooke Fedi, who won in 2:22.49. Staso, in 5:32.12, beat Thorne (5:37.78) in the 500 freestyle after Johnson lost a narrow 100 freestyle decision to the Northstars’ Sarah Walter, 59.73 seconds to Walter’s 59.57 seconds. Grace Smith, posting a time of 28.07 seconds, finished behind Ruffrage (26.72 seconds) in the 50 freestyle. B’ville will head to West Genesee this Friday to compete in the Section III Class A championship meet. Top finishers there advance to Sunday’s state qualifier at Hamilton College.
