To this point, the West Genesee girls swim team remains tough to catch.
In Wednesday night’s match against Christian Brothers Academy at the Le Moyne College pool, the Wildcats used timely 1-2 finishes and enough individual triumphs to put together a 92-82 victory over the Brothers.
To start the meet, WG’s 200 medley relay team of Olivia Castro, Shannon Cahalan, Becca Kanoza and Chezeki Boudreau engaged in a classic with CBA, and the Wildcats pulled it out in one minute, 59.36 seconds, just ahead of the Brothers (1:59.76) at the wall.
Sweeping the sprints, Castro won the 100 freestyle in 56.36 seconds, with Kanoza getting second place in 58.42 seconds. This followed a 50 freestyle where Castro made her way to first place in 25.27 seconds, leaving CBA’s Tessa Queri (26.04 seconds) behind her.
Cahalan swam in the 200 indvidual medley, where in a time of 2:20.25 she beat out CBA’s Julia Torell (2:21.67) for top honors. When they had a rematch in the 100 butterfly, Torell won in 1:02.38, but Cahalan (1:02.62) was right behind her.
Kanoza was part of another 1-2 finish for WG, prevailing in the 100 backstroke with a clocking of 1:05.29 as Abby Mullett, in 1:08.98, made her way to second place.
A larger point total was gained in the 200 freestyle relay. Castro, Dunning, Boudreau and Mikki Riley roared to first place in 1:47.44, while Steph Campagna, Ali McCormack, Jenna Mellen and Ayla Yagan went 2:00.13 to finish second.
Also, Dunning finished second in the 500 freestyle in a strong time of 5:34.44, trailing only Annie Fletcher, who led CBA with wins in that event (5:29.07) and the 200 freestyle (2:04.23), where again Dunning finished second, in 2:07.27.
WG would swim twice in a 48-hour span next week, facing Mexico on Tuesday before visiting Baldwinsville on Sept. 25.
