A terrific regular season and post-season for Skaneateles boys tennis star Ethan Wilcox meant that he had the no. 1 seed going into the Section III state qualifier, which he would back up by winning that tournament and advancing to the biggest event of the season.
The state qualifier, on May 23-24, was an odyssey that began outdoors at Utica Parkway Courts and moved indoors to Drumlins when weather halted the early proceedings.
Wilcox won in the opening round, blanking LaFayette’s Ivan Schnieble 6-0, 6-0, but had his second-round match with Marcellus’ James Garzia halted when he led 3-0 in the first set.
A day later, at Drumlins, Wilcox finished off Garzia, and when he prevailed in the semifinals, too, that clinched a berth in the state tournament, held at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, Queens.
But Wilcox still wanted to win that title match, against Jamesville-DeWitt’s Abe Davis. And he did so, Wilcox prevailing in straight sets 6-4, 6-1.
So Wilcox, Davis and Robert Dotterer (also from J-D), plus the doubles teams of Matt and Colin Nardella (CBA), Josh Druger-Dan Miron (Fayetteville-Manlius) and Dan Kot-Grady Schmidt (Baldwinsville) will make their way to New York City for the state tournament, which starts Thursday.
