Already in the homestretch of its somewhat truncated regular season, the Baldwinsville boys tennis team added to its win total, but could not topple the reigning dynasty at Fayetteville-Manlius.
In last Wednesday’s match, the Bees attempted to end the Hornets’ 220-match win streak, but could only notch a single point in a 6-1 defeat.
It was Hunter Cohen-Ciampichini earning that point in third singles, defeating F-M’s Ryan Izant in straight sets 7-5, 6-4. Matt Rothenhoefer came close to another point, but lost in three sets to Mike Mintskovsky 6-2, 1-6, 7-5 as Jeff Stone fell to Brooks Nagle 6-2, 6-2.
Of the four doubles matches, Dan Kot and Grady Schmidt had the most intense spotlight, but they could not topple F-M’s top duo of Josh Druger and Dan Miron, losing a 7-6, 7-5 decision. The teams of Matt Lawrence-Nick Walker, Gavin Murphy-Scott Wolff and Chris Drain-Eric Johnson all lost in two sets.
A day earlier, the Bees made it past Auburn 5-2, with Kot and Schmidt setting the tone in singles. Kot roared past the Maroons’ Richard Granato 6-1, 6-4 in first singles, while Schmidt dominated Tom Alexander 6-1, 6-0.
B’ville would take a pair of blemishes – one in singles, where Cohen-Ciampichini fell to Luke Petrosino 7-5, 6-1, and one in doubles, where Murphy and Wolff also beaten in straight sets.
However, the Bees swept the other three doubles matches. Rothenhoefer and Walker handled Dan Biljanoski and Richard Nelson 6-0, 6-3, while Drain and Johnson routed Tyler Francis and Teddy Herbert 6-0, 6-1. Lawrence and Stone also prevailed in two sets.
And right after the F-M match, the Bees went to Liverpool on Thursday and got right back in the win column, taking out the Warriors 6-1.
To preserve a 4-0 mark in singles, Lawrence and Walker needed a come-from-behind effort to get past Jeff Fenksen and Dan Muehlemann in three sets 4-6, 6-0, 6-1.
Schmidt teamed with Rothenhoefer to beat Jason Lamb and Evan Maestri 6-2, 6-1, with Murphy and Wolff sweeping Aaron Aemmer and Abdullah Al-Qaraghuli 6-3, 6-3. Drain and Johnson had a 6-1, 6-2 sweep over Mike Fenksen and Evan Vogue.
Stone lost his singles match to Liverpool’s Connor Vaughn 6-0, 6-0, but Cohen-Ciampichini handled Aaron Laviolette 6-4, 6-1, with Kot shutting out Ian Szczesniak in another 6-0, 6-0 match.
