It just so happened that the Jamesville-DeWitt track and field team’s showdown with East Syracuse-Minoa took place far away from either school, as it was part of a three-way meet Wednesday afternoon at Homer.
In the boys event, the Red Rams beat the Spartans 96-45, also knocking out the Trojans 104-37 as ESM took its own narrow 74-65 decision over Homer to salvage a split.
Zach Liebmann and Nate Sturgeon led J-D’s efforts. Liebmann cleared 12 feet 6 inches in his specialty, the pole vault, and added a 400-meter dash victory in 55 seconds flat as Sturgeon took the 110 high hurdles in 16.3 seconds and the 400 hurdles in 1:02.2.
Liebmann and Sturgeon also teamed with Taumeras Howard and Dylan Volk as J-D won the 4×100 relay in 44.4 seconds. Howard was victorious in the 100-meter dash in 11.2 seconds as Volk went 40’ ½” to beat the field in the triple jump.
J-D’s Nick Harron ran the mile in 4:50.2 before Will Hohreiter took the 3,200-meter run in 10:31.7, the pair combining with Samuel Dye and Austin Philleo as the Rams roared to first in the 4×800 relay in 8:25.9. ESM’s Joe Coogan gave his side an 800-meter victory in 2:07.4.
The Rams won five of six field events. Aside from Liebmann and Volk, Joe Murphy topped 6 feet in the high jump, Davis Elmore had a top discus throw of 118’4” and Brian Roth went 39’2 ¾” to beat the field in the shot put.
Moving to the girls side, J-D also had little trouble defeating ESM, 100-41, also getting past Homer 82-59 as the Spartans fell to the Trojans 95-46.
Again, the field events were important, the Red Rams winning everything except the high jump, where ESM’s Nina Zesky managed to clear 5’3” to prevail.
J-D’s Sierra Vasiliou went 15’9 ½” in the long jump after a top shot put toss of 32’2”. Taylor-Rae Danforth cleared 8’6” in the pole vault, while Patrece Martin impressed in the triple jump with 34’10” and Tangela Hightower threw the discus 91 feet.
Ally Fox led the Rams on the oval, running the 100 in 13 seconds flat and the 200 in 26.5 seconds to claim both events as Emilee Carpenter went 11:30.1 in the 3,000-meter run. Fox, Martin, Danforth and Vasiliou won the 4×100 relay in 51.7 seconds as Carpenter helped Rachel Fairbanks, Hannah Stefl and Laura Wengert win the 4×800 relay in 10:04.1.
