For the second time in as many weeks, the Canastota softball team fell victim to a fired-up Center State Conference opponent. In this case, it was Sauquoit Valley coming to town Monday afternoon and going to nine innings before fighting past the Raiders 11-7. In doing so, the Indians avenged a 4-3 loss to Canastota on May 5. The rematch saw Canastota use run-scoring hits from Alexis Havens and Valerie Baer to go ahead 3-0 in the first inning. And that lead held up for a while, as Sauquoit did not score until the fifth off Jessica Patterelli, but hung in there thanks to defense, as Nicole Burline’s catch at the wall in the bottom of the fifth robbed Jessica Patterelli of a home run. It turned wild in the top of the seventh. Still ahead 4-2, Patterelli suddenly got lit up as Sauquoit used five straight hits to put up five runs and move ahead 7-4. Refusing to quit, Canastota made its own comeback in the bottom of the seventh, sparked by two Indians errors. Baer and Jessie Boswell had run-scoring hits and, with the bases loaded and two out, Ally Bernier beat out an infield hit to tie it 7-7. So it went to extra innings. Patterelli reached third base in the bottom of the eighth with the winning run, but got thrown out trying to score. So it was still tied when, in the ninth, Sauquoit used hits by Shania Taylor and Danielle Taylor to spark a decisive four-run outburst.
