No one was going to keep the Cazenovia girls indoor track and field team from another historic appointment in Friday night’s Section III Class B championship meet at Colgate University’s Sanford Field House. Just like the cross country Lakers in the fall, these girls went right to the top, winning the sectional title with 158 points, well clear of the field as Skaneateles took second place with 96 points and Clinton (89 points) settled into third place. It all started in the sprints, where Ashley Winn edged teammate Jillian Vogl, 7.73 seconds to 7.77, to claim the 55-meter dash. Vogl countered by winning the 300-meter dash in 42.74 seconds, with Winn (43.11 seconds) the runner-up, and Hollie Marcelle added a victory in the 600-meter run in 1:42.11, more than three seconds ahead of the field. Marcelle and Winn joined Jackie O’Sullivan and Emmajean Spear to claim the 4×400 relay in 4:20.20, more than four seconds ahead of Skaneateles. In the 4×800, Marcelle was present again, helping Emma Wolsey, Alex Dolbear and Rachel Grimm to get another victory in 10:44.46. Vogl, O’Sullivan, Piper Gianforte and Audrey Bowers were third in the 4×200 (1:55.84). Paige Biviano took her turn in the 55-meter hurdles, prevailing in 9.49 seconds, the only time under 10 seconds, as she also finished second in the long jump (15 feet 8 inches) and fourth in the triple jump. Gianforte won the pole vault, clearing 8 feet 6 inches as Michelle McGinnis tied for third (7 feet) and Emily Clipston (6 feet 6 inches) fifth. In the shot put, more points were amassed as Christie Tainter finished second with a toss of 28 feet 5 inches, just ahead of Grace Eberle in third (27 feet 11 inches) in third and Molly Woodworth (27 feet 6 1/2 inches) in fourth place. In the distance events, Jeanette Cudney rose to second place in the 3,000-meter run in 11:14.19. Caroline Marshall got second place in the 1,500-meter run (5:12.23), while Margaret Wolsey took third in the 1,000-meter run in 3:22.88 and added a fourth in the 1,500. The sectional Class A meet on Saturday, also at Colgate, saw Vernon-Verona-Sherrill earn 20 points, most of them from Jenna Fiacco finishing second (32 feet 2 1/2 inches) and Sam Netzband third (28 feet 11 1/2 inches) in the shot put. VVS also was fifth in the 4×400 relay in 4:33.35 as McKenna Novak took sixth in the 55 hurdles. Oneida’s Kim DeCarr was fourth in the 600 in 1:46.11 as Sara Rifendifer got fourth in the 300 in 46.40 seconds and sixth in the 1,000. Vivian Thurston cleared 7 feet 6 inches to get fourth place in the pole vault.
