As temperatures begin to rise and spring makes its presence known, the Cazenovia Department of Public Works would like to remind residents that inflatable pools over two-feet are prohibited within the village.
“Kiddie pools are fine, anything up to two-feet deep is allowed,” Public Works Administrator Bill Carr said. “But swimming pools and hot tubs with a depth over two-feet require a permit.”
Currently, many retail stores offer inflatable pools that can reach depths of four-feet. These pools can be purchased for around $200 and can be ready for recreational use in one hour. While bought and sold legally, reasons these inflatable pools are prohibited within village limits pertain to safety issues and zoning regulations.
Depths of more than 24 inches and a lack of supervision can quickly lead to dangerous situations Statistics released by the Consumer Product Safety Commission show that 250 children under the age of 5 drown in pools each year.
Cazenovia village code states that all pools over a depth of 24 inches require a fence or other type of enclosure. Section 180-98 subsection C states “Every swimming pool shall be completely enclosed by walls, fences or similar structures not less than five feet nor more than six feet in height. Accessible openings shall be limited to doors or gates equipped with self-closing and locking devices which keep the opening securely fastened at all times. Horizontal openings in fences or walls shall be a maximum of three inches.”
No permit is required for the installation of a swimming pool or hot tub that is entirely above-ground and a depth of less than two-feet. In-ground swimming pools and hot tubs are permitted as accessory structures within the village, however a permit must first be applied for. Failure to comply with village code may lead to fines or further action by officials.

For rescue vehicle and ambulance purposes, be sure to prominently display house numbers on the front of residences.
