Late this month, the Cazenovia wrestling team will get the ultimate measure of itself against new OHSL Liberty division foe Phoenix — who just happens to be the two-time reigning Section III Dual Meet champions and no. 2 in the state rankings among small schools. Before that Jan. 27 clash, though, the Lakers still had plenty of activities to worry about, including next Thursday’s big trip to Hannibal, so it had to go there in top form. Cazenovia’s trip to Marcellus last Wednesday night did not prove too stressful, as the visitors won all but two matches and crushed the Mustangs 59-6. Three times, the Lakers had first-period pins. Cody Foster, at 215 pounds, took just 1:13 to finish off Aaron Murphy, while Dylan Holgate (171 pounds) earned his fall over T.J. Hamilton in 1:24 and Ryan Cook (112 pounds) gained his pin over Keith McIntosh in 1:30. In closer contests, Billy Bigsby (135 pounds) topped Ryan Long 12-3, while Noah Shephard (160 pounds) handled Grant Hardy 11-3 and Jake Wilson (130 pounds) held off Matt Dempsey 6-4. Even the losses were close, as Dylan Evans (119 pounds) fell to Rich Ghezzi 5-1 and Teddy Tormey (145 punds) took a 3-0 defeat to Sam Eberle. Five Cazenovia wrestlers — Brad Nardella (103 pounds), Jose Wells (125 pounds), Adam Lockwood (140 pounds), Dylan Perry (152 pounds) and Jake Adolfi (189 pounds) — didn’t even take the mat, earning forfeits.
