QUEENS – A superb season for Baldwinsville girls tennis concluded with four of its players on the grand stage of New York City’s USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
They were there for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships, which got underway Monday morning with 32 singles players and 32 doubles teams.
On the singles side for the Bees, Mira Nadzan impressed in the opening round, putting together a 6-0, 6-1 romp over Union-Endicott’s Giada Circesni.
However, this put Nadzan into the round of 16 against the top seed, Niskayuna’s Olivia Dartawan. Despite a solid first set Nadzan lost, 6-3, 6-0, as Dartawan eventually reached the finals where she lost to Herricks’ Angel Walia – whose own round-of-16 match was a win over Jamesville-DeWitt’s Mona Farah.
Elsewhere in singles, Alya Kalfass played a close first wet with Washingtonville’s Ally Davis, but could not recover from a defeat in that set, Davis prevailing 7-5, 6-2 before she lost in the next round.
Moving to doubles, Lainey Nesbitt and Sonia Nadzan represented B’ville, meeting Horace Greeley’s Allison Tsai and Michelle Rosenblit in the first round, where they lost by scores of 6-3 and 6-3.
No Section III player would get to the quarterfinal round as Farah, Mira Nadzan and two Fayetteville-Manlius doubles teams – Smareen Mangat-Sadie Toole and Shreya-Bhattacharya-Lindsey Chong – all had round-of-16 losses.
