In the last indoor track meet of 2009, the Cicero-North Syracuse and Liverpool indoor track and field teams both snagged wins during the CNY Indoor Track Association gathering last Tuesday at SUNY-Corltand’s Lusk Field House. CNS won on the girls side, picking up 72 points to edge out Liverpool, who earned 62 points. Mexico was a distant third with 41 points. Jasmine Thompson, Nicole Campagna, Sarah Dean and Maria Lamontagne dominated the 1,600 distance medley, the Northstars winning in 4:25.96, more than half a minute ahead of the field. Thompson (9.03 seconds) and Jessica Wheeler (9.77 seconds) had the top two individual times in the 55-meter hurdles, too, as Liverpool got third in 23.08 seconds. Campagna also joined Katie Laris, Jamie Ryan and Chelsea Davidson as CNS won the 4×400 relay in 4:26.66. Liverpool was fourth in 4:40.96. CNS and Liverpool went 1-2 in the 2,000 distance medley. Marissa Colburn, Brooke Binion, Dajia Delee and Jacqlynn Halstead led the Northstars to victory in 6:01.27 as Jessica Attaway, Laura Patrick, Trina Bills and Carly Bonzerato helped Liverpool get second place in 6:21.54. Katie Osborne and Brooke Binion both made clearances in the high jump (8 feet 8 inches total), helping CNS prevail as Liverpool’s Meagan Turner finished second among individuals and third overall. Sometimes, the Warriors came out on top, as in the 4×800 relay, where Bills, Lesley Bowers, Chelsea Attaway and Rachel Putman prevailed in 10:04.84 and CNS (10:29.76) had to settle for second place. Tatiana Gladney won the individual shot put (32 feet 3 inches), as she and Liverpool teammate Evelyn White took the team crown with 58 feet 1 1/2 inches. Valerie Langevin and Heather Huff helped CNS (57 feet 8 3/4 inches) earn second place. Chelsea Attaway cleared 8 feet and won the pole vault, with the Warriors also fifth in the triple jump. Over on the boys side, it was Liverpool getting to the front with 86 points, well ahead of CNS, who had 58 points for second place. Baldwinsville (51 points) was third. As part of a big effort in field events, Liverpool’s Tony Shuler went 39 feet 6 1/2 inches in the triple jump, winning among individuals as Joe Alvarado joined him on the winning side that recorded 73 feet 7 1/4 inches. Liverpool’s LaQuan Kitchen had a top long jump of 17 feet 5 1/4 inches, and Nate Linger (15 feet 10 inches) was third for a combined victory in 33 feet 3 1/4 inches. Kitchen, Shuler, Keewan Rondinello and Zavon Watkins teamed to win the 1,600 sprint medley relay (3:50.44) as CNS (4:02.55) claimed fourth place. Rondinello and Joe Spernyak won the 55-meter hurdles, with Spernyak (8.14 seconds) posting the fastest individual time. On the oval, Watkins, Mychal Ostuni, Alex Wilke and Chris Clemons teamed up to give Liverpool a winning time of 8:43.21 in the 4×800 relay as CNS again finished fourth (9:22.17). And in the shot put, Jason Osborne and Vince Tesoriero combined to toss it 84 feet 10 3/4 inches, winning as the Northstars’ duo of Jared Thomson and Tawone Williams (83 feet 6 inches) claimed the runner-up spot. With Brendan Ryan and Michael Hyde, CNS won the pole vault, clearing 19 feet 6 inches, just ahead of Alvarado and Joseph Lona (19 feet) of Liverpool. CNS and Liverpool tied for second in the high jump. Liverpool returned with Mike Sanson, Jeff Dwyer, Damien Brown and Kelvin Reis racing to second in the 4×200 relay in 1:43.31 as CNS earned fifth place in 1:53.51. CNS saw Anthony Lupia, Anthony Bender, Mike Kavanagh and Dan Fritz earn second in the 4×400 relay in 4:03.98, with Fritz joining Chris Buchanan, Demetrius Oliver and Alex Bottorff for a second (5:05.41) in the 2,000 distance medley, where Liverpool was fourth.
