With big names all around them, the Skaneateles girls track and field team needed its depth to get past Wednesday’s three-way meet against Phoenix and Christian Brothers Academy. So the Lakers grabbed a pair of relay titles and won a few other events, too, and placed well everywhere to beat the Firebirds 73-68 and the Brothers 95-44. Among other things, Skaneateles saw Phoenix’s Ashley Palmer win four events, including the 200-meter dash (26.5 seconds), 100-meter hurdles (16.4 seconds), triple jump (34 feet) and long jump (16 feet 8 1/2 inches), further complicating the task. Caroline Walton helped counter this by throwing the shot put 31 feet 8 inches and the discus 102 feet, while Gabby Eckles cleared 4 feet 10 inches to edge out Phoenix’s Marisa Turner in the high jump for some crucial late points. On the oval, Victoria Sakal emerged with the 100-meter title in 12.9 seconds as Carly Strods took the 800-meter run (2:32.2) and Grace Van Der Ven needed 1:05.9 to prevail in the 400-meter dash. Strods, Van Der Ven, Erin Tonzi and Danielle Mazzeo combined to give Sknaeateles first place in the 4×800 relay (10:35.5). And the Lakers clinched the meet when Kaela Fiutak, Eileen Ford, Amanda Gray and Cassie Berg emerged to win the 4×400 relay in 4:34 flat. By contrast, the Skaneateles boys track team lost 77-64 to Phoenix and 87-54 to CBA, unable to win many events, though the Lakers’ 4×800 relay team, anchored by Calvin Davis, won in 9:09.7. CBA, who swept the meet, got double wins from Tom Voorheis (mile, 3,200-meter run) and Tre Williams (long jump, high jump).
