The first day of April brought — no fooling — warm sunshine and temperatures close to 80 degrees. In other words, perfect for baseball and softball. Chittenango took full advantage of this situation, as it two varsity diamond teams both went to Homer to get a timely start to the 2010 season. On the baseball side, the Bears got off to a near-perfect start against Homer, and rode that fact to a 6-2 victory over the Trojans. A season ago, Chittenango reached the Section III Class A playoffs, only to get bounced in the first round in a 7-6, eight-inning defeat to Jamesville-DeWitt. Enough players are back for the Bears to improve upon that finish. In its first inning of the season, the Bears tagged Homer pitcher Tyler Simmonetta for four runs. It added single tallies in the fourth and fifth innings and would not get caught. Jeff Pierce pitched most of the way, earning the win as he and reliever Kevin Streeter combined to allow just six hits. At the plate, Wes Burghardt led the Bears with two RBIs. It proved quite different on the softball side as Chittenango ran into Homer, the defending Class B-1 champions, and lost by a score of 12-0. The Bears weren’t quiet at the plate, getting seven hits off Trojan ace Alexis Brown, but stranded all those runners. Meanwhile, Homer went in front with a three-run third inning, then used seven runs in the bottom of the fourth to get away. Kaleigh Koegel took the loss, with Samantha Weeks seeing a relief stint. The Trojans’ power really stood out as it hit four home runs — two from Alyssa Morgan, one each from Gabby Luety and Rachel Perry. Luety also had two doubles. With the weather expected to stay warm this week, both Chittenango teams will be in action against Fulton and East Syracuse-Minoa.
