Bishop Ludden’s football team is working its way back to the Section III Class C playoffs. And while Jordan-Elbridge might not quite get there, it now has a chance to earn a winning record in the 2010 regular season. Both sides would prevail on Saturday, as the Gaelic Knights ventured south in the afternoon and, with a big first half, beat the combined LaFayette/Fabius-Pompey squad 34-12. A few hours later, the Eagles went to Fulton and faced Thousand Islands. J-E had its own quick start, and it proved enough for a 21-12 victory over the Vikings. All Ludden required was one more victory to get itself into the playoffs, and it wasted little time demonstrating its intentions to LaFayette/F-P. Early in the first quarter, the Gaelic Knights moved to the Lancers’ 29-yard line, from where Matt Rogers threw to the end zone – and found Antoin Montgomery for the touchdown. Before the period was done, Ludden had made it 14-0 as Michael Works scored on an eight-yard run and Chris Davis connected on his second straight extra point. Montgomery wasn’t done making big plays. In the second period, he took a handoff at his own 34-yard line, found a seam and took off, 66 yards to the LaFayette/F-P end zone. When Works returned to score on a 13-yard run just before halftime, Ludden had a 27-0 lead. Davis, who led the Gaelic Knights in touchdowns going into the game, found the end zone in the third quarter as Rogers threw a 13-yard scoring pass to him. Most of the starters were on the bench when the Lancers got both of its scores in the fourth quarter. J-E has done a remarkable job, given that it hasn’t played at home all season. But the Eagles were the “home” team at Fulton when Thousand Islands showed up, and maybe that gave the Eagles a little more motivation in this non-league contest. Just like Bishop Ludden, J-E had a 14-0 edge when the first quarter was done. A pair of effective scoring drives, featuring the potent Eagles ground game, ended with Nick Berwind scoring on short plunges of two yards and one yard. The only difference was that, in the game’s middle stages, J-E quieted down, unable to add to its total as the Vikings came right back at them. Thousand Islands got on the board in the second period when Evan Bach threw a 12-yard TD pass to Ben Henry. When the conversion attempt missed, J-E carried a 14-6 edge to halftime. Again, the Vikings got the ball in the end zone in the third quarter, closing to 14-12 on Chris Magboo’s 12-yard run. Thousand Islands went for two to tie it, but J-E’s defense stopped it. It remained that way until the fourth quarter. Pinned on its own 30-yard line, needing a spark, the Eagles gave the ball to Mike Killeen – and he delivered his biggest run of the season to date, a 70-yard sprint to the other end zone. When Lian Cornfield added the PAT, J-E had a lead of two scores – but its defense would not allow anything more. J-E, to get that winning record it so badly wants, must win a tough game Saturday at 4-2 Altmar-Parish-Williamstown, a day after Bishop Ludden closes its regular season at home against Tully.
