With the sun out again and the precipitation stopped, it was high time for the Cicero-North Syracuse softball team to strike again. As an opening statement, the Northstars took apart Utica Proctor last Thursday at Gillette Field, shutting out the Raiders 10-0. For a team with all kinds of Section III and state championships on its resume (including last year’s sectional AA title), anything less than a run deep into June is considered a disappointment. And in 2009, CNS has those high ambitions again. It helps to have two Division I-bound seniors, Morgan Nandin and Lucia Meola, at the heart of the lineup. Nandin has fully heeled after a broken right ankle suffered last December, early in the girls basketball Northstars’ sectional championship season. Meanwhile, a new pitcher, Sydney O’Hara, took her turn on the mound against Proctor and, right away, proved sharp. She surrendered just one hit in a complete-game effort. CNS produced three runs in the first inning, cooled off a bit, then used a five-run sixth inning to get clear as it finished with 13 hits. Meola doubled and drove in three runs, while Nandin doubled twice and added an RBI. O’Hara and Sydney Harbaugh each had a double and RBI, with Brittany Paul also driving in a run.
