With a determined effort from a slightly wounded star, the Liverpool girls tennis team pulled out a 4-3 victory over Baldwinsville in their CNY Counties League showdown on Friday afternoon. Both sides already had three points on the ledger when the first singles match between the Warriors’ Sarah O’Hara and the Bees’ Amari Pollard went to a third set. O’Hara had injured her leg in the Warriors’ 6-1 victory over Utica Proctor two days earlier, but she knew the importance of the B’ville match — and wanted to face Pollard, her doubles partner when both played at the Empire State Games in Buffalo this summer. Starting strong, O’Hara won the first set 6-4, only to see Pollard rally to take the second set 6-3 and move ahead 4-3 in the third set. A point from getting broken, O’Hara came back, won that game, then claimed the last two games to win the match 6-4. The other points were already on the board. Lindsey Wallace dominated in third singles, sweeping Rachel Taylor 6-1, 6-1. In doubles, Maria Chayban and Melissa Inch toppled Catherine Corsito and Taylor Ferrari 6-2, 6-4, while Kerry McSweeney and Madeline Cass gained a 6-1, 6-1 win over Maddie Fiello and Taylor Haynes. In three sets, Kristina Monakhova lost to Kahlei Reisinger 7-6, 6-7, 6-3. In that win over Proctor, the Warriors lost just four games in four doubles matches. In singles play, Monakhova needed a third-set tie-breaker to beat Rose Zaloom 6-1, 1-6, 7-6 (7-1) as Wallace beat Nicolina Labella 6-3, 6-1. Liverpool will get its shot at Fayetteville-Manlius Wednesday as part of a busy week that includes matches against Auburn, Corcoran and Rome Free Academy, plus a Saturday tournament that it will host.
